The Car Behind This Bag

1989 · 3.0L M103 inline-six · Sindelfingen · W124 chassis · the over-engineered mid-size

The W124 was the car that broke Mercedes' financial model — it was so well built that the factory eventually had to scale back its production standards on later cars to remain profitable. Engineered between 1977 and 1984, launched in 1985, and built through 1995, it was the saloon that introduced the multi-link rear suspension and the single-wiper front windscreen system to the wider market. The 300E used the 3.0-litre M103 single-cam six.

It was the yuppie status car that out-engineered every contemporary BMW E34 and saved Mercedes' reputation in North America after the unloved W126 mid-cycle problems. Car and Driver put the 300E on its 10 Best list five years running. AMG built the legendary 300E "Hammer" — a 6.0-litre V8 saloon that quietly became one of the fastest sedans in the world for the price of a small house.

W124 production passed 2.7 million units across all body styles before it was replaced by the E-Class W210 in 1995. Survivors with original Sindelfingen interiors — MB-Tex or leather over the deeply pleated W124 seat profile — are now considered, increasingly correctly, to be the last truly over-built Mercedes saloon.
