The Car Behind This Bag

2007-2019 · 4.2L or 4.7L Ferrari-built V8 · Modena · designed by Pininfarina · the longest production run of any modern Maserati

The GranTurismo was Maserati's longest-running modern car — built in Modena from 2007 to 2019, twelve years of essentially unchanged styling at a moment when the rest of the industry was iterating every four. Pininfarina drew the body, with Jason Castriota leading the design. The 4.2-litre and later 4.7-litre V8s were built by Ferrari at Maranello — a relationship that ended with the model's discontinuation, making the GranTurismo the last Maserati to carry a Ferrari-built engine.

It was the car Maserati used to re-enter the cultural conversation after a quarter-century of irrelevance. Top Gear filmed lap after lap in them. The Wolverine drove one in The Wolverine (2013). George Clooney bought one. Jennifer Lopez kept one in white. Across the late 2000s the GranTurismo became the unspoken alternative to the Aston Martin DB9 — slightly cheaper, slightly less subtle, and unmistakably Italian in a way the Aston, for all its merits, was not.

Maserati built roughly 28,805 GranTurismos before discontinuing the line in 2019. The interior — Poltrona Frau leather over a layout that aged better than almost any other 2000s Italian car — has become the period statement of Modena's pre-Stellantis era and a quietly appreciating piece of design.
