The Car Behind This Bag

1994 · 3.6L flat-six · Zuffenhausen · 993 chassis · the last air-cooled 911

The 993 was the final air-cooled 911 — the car that closed thirty-two years of continuous flat-six development before the water-cooled 996 replaced it in 1998. Launched in 1993, the 993 was built around an entirely new multi-link rear suspension that finally tamed the legendary lift-off oversteer of the earlier cars. The 3.6-litre flat-six produced 272 horsepower in base Carrera trim, climbing to 408 in the twin-turbo variant introduced in 1995.

Among Porsche enthusiasts the 993 has become a kind of holy land. The shape is widely considered the cleanest of the 911 silhouettes — designed by Tony Hatter under Harm Lagaay, with smoother hips and laid-back headlights that made every previous 911 look slightly square. Jerry Seinfeld owns multiple 993s. The car has consistently appreciated faster than any other modern Porsche.

Porsche built 68,029 993s across five years before discontinuing the air-cooled platform in 1998. The interiors, trimmed in Zuffenhausen leather over the period's distinctive textured cloth inserts, are now the cabin reference point for any conversation about late-air-cooled Porsche taste — and the watershed moment between two distinctly different eras of the company.
