The Car Behind This Bag
1993 · 4.6L InTech V8 · Wixom, Michigan · MN12 chassis · the first 4.6 V8 Lincoln
The Mark VIII launched for the 1993 model year as the replacement for the long-running Mark VII. Built on the MN12 platform — shared with the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar — the Mark VIII was the first Lincoln to receive Ford's all-new 4.6-litre InTech (modular) V8, the engine that would carry every full-size Ford and Lincoln through the next decade. Air suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and the sloping fastback roofline made it visibly the most modern Lincoln in a generation.
It was the car of the early-1990s American executive who had grown out of a Cadillac Eldorado but wasn't yet willing to switch to a Mercedes S-Class. The Mark VIII sold to dentists, regional bank presidents, and the aging end of the original 1980s yuppie cohort. Goodfellas had already put a previous-generation Mark on screen; the Mark VIII inherited the cultural register without ever quite reaching the same screen presence. By 1996 the LSC variant had become a quiet performance bargain.
Lincoln built the Mark VIII through 1998 before replacing it with the Lincoln LS. Total production reached 137,389 across six years. The original Wixom-fitted leather interiors — broad bench-style fronts, automatic climate, the early-1990s digital dash — represent one of the last properly American luxury cabins built before the SUV era reshaped the entire category.
