The Car Behind This Bag

1976 · 4.5L M117 V8 · Sindelfingen · W116 chassis · the first car Mercedes called an S-Class

The W116 was the car that gave the S-Class its name. Launched in 1972 and built through 1980, it replaced the W108/109 saloons and codified the formula every flagship Mercedes has followed since: long-wheelbase saloon, V8 power, the most advanced safety engineering in the industry. The 450SEL was the long-wheelbase version with the 4.5-litre M117 V8, sold to American and Middle Eastern buyers who wanted the best Mercedes made.

It was Helmut Schmidt's chancellor car. It was the car Idi Amin imported by the planeload. It was the car that showed up in The Driver and The French Connection II as the unspoken European counterweight to whatever American sedan the antagonist was driving. The 450SEL 6.9, the homologation halo car of the same body, became the unofficial high-speed escape vehicle of West Germany's industrial elite during the Red Army Faction years.

The W116 was also the first production car in the world offered with anti-lock brakes, in 1978. Surviving 450SELs with original Sindelfingen leather interiors are now climbing in value as the 1970s S-Class is re-evaluated against the increasingly digital cars that followed it.
