The Car Behind This Bag
1976 · 3.0L M30 inline-six · Dingolfing · E12 chassis · designed by Paul Bracq
The E12 was the first car BMW called a 5 Series. Launched in 1972 to replace the New Class sedans, it was designed by Paul Bracq — the same hand that drew the Mercedes Pagoda SL — and built at Dingolfing. The 530i was the US-market version with the M30 inline-six in 3.0-litre form, the engine that would carry every flagship BMW for the next two decades.
In an era when an American mid-sized car meant a mushy V8 and a soft suspension, the 530i drove like nothing Detroit was building. It cornered. It stopped. Motor Trend called it "the world's best four-door sports car" in 1976. It was the car that taught a generation of enthusiasts what "European driving feel" actually meant.
The first 5 Series was also the seed of everything BMW became commercially. By the 1980s, the 5 Series was the brand's bread and butter — a position it has held continuously for over fifty years. This is where it started.
