The Car Behind This Bag

1975 · 2.7L flat-six · Zuffenhausen · G-series chassis · first year of the impact bumpers

1975 was the first full year of the G-series 911 — the version Porsche introduced to meet new US 5-mph impact-bumper regulations and to begin the slow forward march of the original 901-platform car. The bumpers were larger, the body taller at the corners, and the interior trimmed in deeply textured chequered cloth that has since become a Porsche signature. The 911S sat in the middle of the range with the 2.7-litre flat-six in 175-horsepower trim.

It was the moment the 911 stopped being a sports car for racers and became a sports car for an emerging professional class. Steve McQueen drove a slate grey 1976 911S — the same essential car a year on — in his final years before The Hunter. Janis Joplin's psychedelic-painted 356 from 1965 had passed into Porsche legend by then; the 911S was its successor as the rich-and-interesting Californian default.

Porsche built the G-series 911 from 1974 through 1989, a sixteen-year run that effectively saved the company through the Volkswagen-platform 924/944 era. 1975 examples are increasingly recognized as the moment the 911 grew up — and the original Zuffenhausen-fitted interiors, with their pinstriped corduroy or Pascha-print insets, are now a serious collector concern.
