The Car Behind This Bag

2003 · 4.2L V8 quattro · Neckarsulm · D2 chassis · the all-aluminium flagship

The D2 A8 was the car that announced Audi's arrival in the German luxury saloon segment that BMW and Mercedes had treated as their private property for decades. Launched in 1994 and built through 2002 — with the 2003 model year representing the final months of the platform — the A8 was the first volume production saloon in the world built around an all-aluminium spaceframe. Audi had developed the Audi Space Frame technology specifically for this car, in partnership with Alcoa, and the resulting body weighed roughly 240 kilograms less than a steel-bodied equivalent.

It was Jason Bourne's car. The Bourne films from 2002 onward put the A8 on screen as the deliberate alternative to the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class — the choice of an architecturally serious character in an action thriller, the first Audi to seriously challenge the German luxury hierarchy. The 4.2-litre V8 with quattro all-wheel drive produced 305 horsepower in W12 trim. The W12 variant — twelve cylinders, all-aluminium body, all-wheel drive — quietly became one of the most over-engineered production saloons of its decade.

Audi built 105,114 D2 A8s across the model's run before the D3 replaced it in 2003. The Neckarsulm-fitted leather and figured-walnut interiors remain the period statement of Audi's most ambitious decade and the cabin reference point of the brand's transition into the German big three.
