The V70 XC was the all-wheel-drive, raised-suspension version of Volvo's V70 wagon — the original Cross Country, launched in 1997 as Volvo's response to the Subaru Outback that had effectively defined a new segment. The 2002 model year sat near the high point of the second-generation P2 platform, with the 2.4-litre turbocharged inline-five producing 197 horsepower in T5 trim. The body had higher fender flares, plastic cladding, and the kind of slightly-raised stance that signalled "wagon for skiing" to the entire 2000s middle class.
It was the unofficial vehicle of the early-2000s North American university faculty member, the Vermont state senator, the Pacific Northwest architectural conservation specialist. The car appeared in The Squid and the Whale as deliberate visual shorthand for a particular kind of Brooklyn intellectual decline. By 2003 Volvo split the Cross Country off as its own model line — the XC70 — making the 2002 V70 XC one of the last to carry the original badging.
Volvo built around 600,000 second-generation V70s from 2000 through 2007. The Cross Country variants — the XC and later the XC70 — became among the most influential wagons of the early 2000s, shaping the entire crossover-wagon segment that followed. The original Gothenburg-fitted leather interiors, with the distinctive vertical-band centre console, remain a clean Scandinavian period statement.
