The Car Behind This Bag

1999 · 4.4L M62 V8 · Dingolfing · E38 chassis · the 7 Series Bond drove

The E38 was the 7 Series at its quietest peak. Built from 1994 to 2001, it was the last 7 Series designed primarily by hand — drawn under the watch of Boyke Boyer with the body proportions resolved before computer-aided design fully took over the BMW studios. The 1999 740i used the 4.4-litre M62 V8 and the same fundamentally elegant package that the press of the day called possibly the best-looking executive saloon in the world.

It was Bond's car. Pierce Brosnan drove an E38 750iL through Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), remote-controlled from the back seat in the famous Hamburg parking-garage chase. The car made the 7 Series visible to a new generation. The Transporter a few years later put a tuned E38 in the lead role. In Germany the 740i became the alternative to the W140 S-Class for buyers who wanted something less conspicuously imperial.

BMW built 327,598 E38s across seven years before the controversial Bangle-styled E65 replaced it in 2001. The original Dingolfing-fitted leather and figured-walnut interior remains, by consensus, one of the cleanest cabin designs of the 1990s and the high-water mark of pre-iDrive BMW ergonomics.
