The Car Behind This Bag

1981 · 3.8L M116 V8 · Sindelfingen · C107 chassis · the long-wheelbase SL coupe

The C107 SLC was Mercedes' answer to a question almost no one was asking — what if the R107 SL roadster had a fixed roof and rear seats? The factory stretched the SL platform by 360 millimetres, added a fastback roof with louvered C-pillar windows in place of full rear glass, and called it a personal grand tourer. Built from 1971 to 1981, the SLC remained the only V8-powered four-seat coupe Mercedes would build until the C140 of the 1990s.

It was also a serious rally car. Mercedes prepared 450SLC 5.0 versions for the 1979 and 1980 rally seasons, winning the Bandama Rally outright with Hannu Mikkola and the South American Marathon with Andrew Cowan. By 1981 the road-going 380SLC used the same 3.8-litre M116 V8 in slightly milder tune. Few cars have led such a strange double life — Cannes hotel valet by day, Ivory Coast rally winner by night.

The SLC was discontinued at the end of 1981 to make room for the W126 SEC coupe. Total production across all engines came to 62,888 — modest by Mercedes standards. Original C107 interiors, with their broad MB-Tex or leather buckets and chequered wool inserts on early cars, have begun to be re-appreciated for what they are.
