The 1975 Volkswagen Westfalia T2 was built for leaving. Westfalia-Werke turned the bus into a home on wheels — a pop-top roof, a bed folded into the rear bench, a kitchenette that closed with one hand. The orange plaid lined the seats and the bed: the fabric of surf trips down the coast, of overland routes across continents, of campground mornings where the view had changed overnight. It was never about arriving. It was about going.

This weekender carries that plaid forward — the history, packed for your next trip.

About the Plaid

factory option · VW Type 2 / Westfalia camper · mid-1970s · woven plaid · period palette: burnt orange, green, black

The plaid was the signature of the Westfalia camper. From the late 1960s through the 1970s, Westfalia-Werke turned the Volkswagen Type 2 into Europe's definitive home on wheels, and the cabin it built — seats, side panels, the fold-out bed — was wrapped in a woven plaid that became as recognizable as the bus itself. The mid-1970s T2 carried a warm palette of burnt orange, green, and black: a pattern made to wear hard, hide dust, and still feel like home at the end of a long day's drive.

By 1975 the Westfalia had become the vehicle of a whole way of moving through the world — surf trips down the coast, overland routes across continents, families living for weeks out of a pop-top roof and a kitchenette that folded shut with one hand. The plaid was the backdrop to all of it. More than any badge or paint colour, it is the detail owners remember: the fabric of the mornings when the view outside had changed overnight.

The textile used here is new-production plaid, woven to the exact mid-1970s factory palette rather than cut from a single interior — historically accurate, and made in small batches so the pattern can carry forward without depending on dwindling original stock. Each piece is cut and built by hand, so no two are identical. Liner may vary.
